Wine from Grape to Glass (Hardcover)

The essential guide to the wines of the world and how they are made. Refreshingly opinionated, beautifully illustrated, and newly revised throughout.

Wine from Grape to Glass is the essential guidebook for wine lovers who want to understand how their favorite wines are grown, how they are produced, and how best to savor them. The first half of the book is devoted to the process of winemaking and wine appreciation. The mysteries of the vineyard and terroir, the grape harvest, fermentation, and aging are all explained in full, as are the intricacies of serving, tasting, and storing wine. The second half of the book examines the best wines of the world, country by country, in a level of detail that is satisfying without being overwhelming. More than one thousand color illustrations, including numerous maps, make this a visual as well as a textual guide.

This fourth edition of Wine from Grape to Glass is revised and updated throughout. It includes new sections on recent trends in winemaking―including rosés and natural wines―and expanded coverage of many winemaking regions, including Eastern Europe, the Middle East, South America, China, and Japan.

Biography

Jens Priewe was born in Hamburg, Germany, and earned his doctorate in History of Economics and Social Affairs. From 1972 to 1990, he was an editor at magazines such as Der Spiegel, Stern and Manager Magazin, covering politics and economics. During that time, he had his first experience with fine wine, and subsequently published The Great Wines of Italy, documenting Italy's strive for better quality. In the early 1990s, he foresaw a need for books on wine basics in light of the emerging interest in fine wines by new consumers. He attended oenology courses and began travelling overseas, with his research culminating in his main oeuvre Wine: From Grape to Glass. The comprehensive guide to winemaking, wine appreciation, and wines of the world was awarded with a gold medal by the Culinary Academy. Priewe then wrote the scripts for a 15-episode TV series "The Wines of the New World" produced by the public German television channel (ARD).
Today, Jens Priewe is one of the world’s leading writers on wine and his books have sold well over a million copies. His accolades also include the Prix Champagne Lanson, the Award of Honour from Feinschmecker magazine, and Sommelier Ad Honorem of the Italian Sommelier Association. He currently resides in Munich and is a columnist for the monthly Feinschmecker magazine, among others. He also is founder and editor of the online magazine Weinkenner (www.weinkenner.de).
